ABSTRACT

This chapter examines various possible career paths in the data processing department and considers a number of aspects of training. It covers two of the most significant aspects of making optimum use of good staff, which is, in the end, the best way of keeping them. These aspects are closely interrelated, since to trace a career path without indicating appropriate training is merely to express a hope that accumulated experience will be enough to move an employee from one point on the path to another. In discussing the career paths for punch operators and control staff, one assumption is made that the majority of the staff will be happy to find an appropriate level in their unit without being subject to any feeling that promotion is a necessary part of a career–that, in fact, a career can be happily maintained at a given level of responsibility.
