ABSTRACT

According to HCITB statistics, employment in the industry generally increased rapidly up to 1980 before falling back in 1981–82. Certain sectors, e.g. industrial catering, have slumped badly with the onset of recession, while others, most notably fast food, have continued to grow and provide more jobs. There is a marked tendency, however, for new job opportunities to be of the part-time variety, even in the more ‘permanent’ clerical occupations.
