ABSTRACT

This chapter is a continuation of the preceding chapter to present the response of unsymmetrical buildings to earthquakes. Here, the structure is analyzed for the effect of inertial forces acting at the floor levels using a three-dimensional model. Structures can be safely designed for smaller forces when yielding is allowed; in this case, the analysis considers demands for ductility as well as strength. Nonlinear response is a vast subject only briefly introduced; the use of the results in the design of unsymmetrical buildings is not discussed. A nonlinear static procedure, referred to as pushover analysis, is briefly introduced.
