ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the core data of sentential negation in West Flemish (WF) relevant for the issue of negative concord (NC) as an instantiation of Multiple Agree (MA). It also presents the MA account of NC proposed by Zeijlstra. The chapter discusses the conceptual and empirical problems raised by the proposal. It introduces the theoretical machinery that the authors adopt for their own analysis. The chapter explores the analysis of WF NC in terms of binary Agree. Zeijlstra proposes that the constituents are semantically non-negative indefinites with an [uneg] feature. According to the MA account, NC is a one-to-many relation in which the negative operator agrees with each n-word and in which there is no specific relation between the individual n-words. Like the n-constituents, geen-NPs are both quantificational and negative. According to the feature specification of complex n-constituents, such as niet dikkerst, "not often"; niet meer, "no more"; and niet vele, "not many", differs from that of niet.
