ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests an assessment of the contribution of the research to the state of the art is provided and directions for further research. This research contributes to the state of the art in demand modeling applications by modeling the adoption of telecommuting, and by furthering understanding of the telecommuting adoption process. It contributes to demand modeling techniques by developing two applications of simultaneous estimation of discrete choice and latent variable models with continuous, discrete and ordered categorical indicators, and by presenting the applications of modeling using menu data in the employer's program design model and in the employee's preferred program model. The ideal telecommuting program depends on the characteristics of the organization and on the employer's motivations and constraints to adopt telecommuting. The potential of telecommuting to reduce the organization's costs is limited, unless a large enough number of employees telecommute often enough to free up some office space.
