ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how to launch a news app or digital edition on mobile devices. The Apple Store launched in 2008 and has over two million apps. Most of these apps are for the iPad or the iPhone. But there are around 10,000 for the Apple Watch and 8,000 for Apple TV. There are even more apps listed in the Google Play store for Android devices. We are merely at the start of the app revolution and there is still plenty of growth in Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This chapter invites readers to develop ideas around content-based apps. Ideas should take into account the unique functionality provided by smartphones, tablet devices or smartwatches. It looks at the design process for apps and magazine digital editions. It discusses entrepreneurial journalism and how apps generate revenue. It ends with an expert interview with a spokesman for Quark Software, a creator of an app design tool.
