ABSTRACT

Readers are encouraged to take a user-centred approach to editorial content creation, but this chapter takes it a stage further and looks at design of websites and apps. In this chapter we take a look at user experience (UX) design. The UX is the overall feel of the website or app, and the user interface (UI) is the design and presentation. In an ideal world, you don’t want users thinking about the interface at all. It also includes coding skills for journalists and looks at the basics of languages such as HTML5 – Hypertext Markup Language version 5 and CSS – Cascading Style Sheets. More broadly it encourages the reader to think like a website developer, so you understand the strengths and limitations of the technology. Larger media brands, such as the BBC and the Guardian, employ coders, visualisers and developers to work side-by-side with reporters.
