ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses past achievements and future prospects for job redesign. It suggests that the task facing social scientists and others interested in job redesign, is for them to integrate their work into the more general context of employee emancipation at work. A new structure which allowed employees more control in strategic policy might provide the opportunity for worker demands for new forms of work organisation to be more clearly heard. The 'maps' may need to include the links between unions, government and employers associations, with special reference to multi and trans-national corporations and international organisations. Highly centralised administrations have resulted, in central government, local government and in the public services like health and education. As an educational programme the approach has obvious merit though on its own is unlikely to lead to developments that may significantly challenge conventional management prerogatives.
