ABSTRACT

Muskmelon is a species of melon that comprises numerous cultivated varieties or cultivars. The most recent studies focus on the common ancestor of cultivated melons in Asia , although geographic origin and region of domestication in Africa have also been studied because of the existence of numerous wild African species. The onset of harvest and postharvest disorders is frequently associated with pre-harvest conditions, but a few disorders are exacerbated by inadequate postharvest conditions. Periderm formation in melon skin can be wound-induced or naturally induced during melon development. Water-soaking disorder (WSD) is also known as vitrescence, vitreous texture, translucency, and glassiness. WSD appears in the fruit before harvest and is independent of melon climacteric behavior. A calmodulin-binding protein was also absent in WSD tissues. The disruption of cell wall turgor could reduce cell turgor, alter the water potential, increase water uptake, and finally result in hyperhydricity of the tissues.
