ABSTRACT

Every year many disabled activists, artists and writers apply for or are asked to apply for large conferences as presenters, lecturers and the like. Many of these artists have been in an atmosphere in their life and in school or even around their own family where their voices are ignored, squashed or denied. At least for now until things become more equitable across the board, cast artists with disabilities. Often a non-disabled actor will be seen to be playing the disability and its technicalities, not the character. There are two kinds of barriers to disabled artists, human and physical. Disability consciousness impels and is informed by the social movement actions that are happening within the disability world and culture. Having a staff aware of the disabled norms and political movements and social issues not only makes them more well-rounded as people, but allows them to truly understand and work with those who dwell within that culture.
