ABSTRACT

Social demographic data were collected in order to describe the therapeutic community participants and comparison group and to investigate whether differences in outcome were related to differences within the samples. Nine percent of the therapeutic community participants and 11.2 percent of the comparison group were charged with a drug offense. Participation in the therapeutic community should reduce the likelihood of antisocial/criminal behavior by reducing risk factors such as the youth's antisocial attitudes. Although research has focused on long-term outcomes for therapeutic communities, few studies have focused on intermediate outcomes to determine if therapeutic communities are effective in changing antisocial attitudes and addressing responsivity issues such as anxiety, self-esteem, and depression. The reason for the discrepancy was that Mohican Youth Center was designated as a therapeutic community to treat juvenile males with a substance abuse problem. To determine what factors predicted successful completion of the therapeutic community, a logistic regression was computed.
