ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the institutional ‘nuts and bolts’ of the three case studies for this book – the compliance systems under the Montreal Protocol to the Ozone Convention, the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). It highlights the similarities and differences in the procedural design of the three compliance systems, and provides a theoretically informed rationale for the selection of these case studies.
