ABSTRACT

A majority of coaches realises the potential of recovery activities to have a positive impact on performance. Fatigue in athletes frequently results from extensive travelling which sometimes is associated with sleep deficits especially when travelling across time zones. Sleep is the most natural and important recovery strategy for humans. So far physical fatigue and recovery strategies have been emphasised in research. The element of mental fatigue and consequently the need for mental recovery embrace the spotlight of research. Sleep is the most natural and important recovery strategy for humans. Disturbed sleep, however, will affect performance in sport and in general life as well as athletes’ health. Performance measurement is much more complex in the work context and it may have more impact on society if a wrong decision is made being a pilot or a traffic controller compared to winning or losing a game of football.
