ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book solely focuses on issues related to motor skill. The majority of the work included relates to children since most of the research and practice relating to Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) has focused on children. Research has identified that for many people with DCD there are co-occurring non-motor difficulties including in mental and physical health, organisation, attention, language processing and other cognitive skills. Children with DCD experience difficulties with the development of motor skill from the early years and throughout childhood. The book therefore focuses on motor development and skill acquisition. It also focuses on biological aspects of development, and particularly on understanding the genetic contributions to neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as biological factors at play in DCD. Allied health professionals often work alongside educators to support those with DCD.
