ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the strategies the original team employed to form and develop the partnership, the preliminary outcomes that emerged, and how the partnership is continuing to evolve. The Research Practice Collaboratory project encountered both challenges and opportunities while launching and building a sustainable research– practice partnership that could serve the goals and priorities of all partners. The chapter summarizes the strategies the partnership adopted to engage in the collaborative effort while navigating the complexities of an educational system committed to change and improvement. Education Development Center (EDC) designed the experience as a set of activities in which partners studied and discussed relevant research on the mathematics learning of young children and effective uses of technology to support such learning. EDC researchers hoped that within a couple months of active classroom exploration, the group would arrive at a common hypothesis about a core problem underlying students' struggles with mathematics and a promising solution.
