ABSTRACT

The exact form in which each organization will wish to provide flexibility will vary according to the needs of the organization, the type of work undertaken, the shape of the grading system itself, and the nature of promotion prospects. Once the post is correctly graded-in other words, its relative normal value as compared with the other posts in the organization has been determined-the grading system in fact provides a stepping off place from which Management can assess how far above the average the individual really is. The grading system caters basically for the permanent staff of the organization. Many organizations, however, may wish to employ certain types of staff on short term contracts, particularly in creative spheres. There are few main forms of special payment which can be used in connexion with a grading system. Bonuses can be used for spasmodic payments, either for a single exceptional piece of work or for long service.
