ABSTRACT

The grade level definitions attempt to reproduce in a highly condensed form the results of many pages of description and illustration. This condensation is necessary to produce a working document, but it must always be remembered that it is no more than a summary and that it cannot be applied accurately without skilled interpretation. The choice of factors could be described as spreading a series of nets to pick up all the vital ingredients of a job and assess them against the same ingredients in other jobs. In essence, of course, the requirements under each factor at every grade level are a matter of Management policy, and it would be perfectly possible for any Management, if it wished, to attach different grade labels to the levels of one or more of the factors described here, without of necessity changing the grade labels for levels in the other factors.
