ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the key challenges in the business ecosystem in India and describes past and present changes in the legislation and their effect on business. It explores the overall performance of India in various aspects of business in comparison to global economies. The chapter focuses on core issues that arise due to the government legislation, the prevailing economic, legal and social issues and challenges, and how an understanding of such information can help businesses operate better. Since 2014, the Government of India has aggressively taken measures to make reforms in the regulatory framework and make it easy to do business in India by creating a business-friendly environment. The legal system in India is based on common law that was introduced by the British. Labour law provides a framework for fundamental principles and rights at work, which employers, workers and their representatives need to comply with.
