ABSTRACT

Pivotal to the approach and to forging enduring safety with parents who sexually assault their children is work with the extended family. Work with the harming father's own family can also involve identifying and addressing other instances of abuse which may have never previously come to light. Children harmed by their parent, along with their siblings experience multiple and repeating losses which amongst others, typically include: stable family life, rights to develop their sexual identity without intrusion, a safe parental relationship and financial security. Grandparents are uniquely placed in children's lives to provide long term unconditional support and love, in general without the burden of daily parenting. While the harming father's own parents and family can play a crucial role in supporting the victimized child and siblings, they are also the individuals who are most likely to maintain ongoing contact with the harming father throughout his life.
