ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a description of how safety is considered and promoted from the outset of the program. It discusses that the concept of safety for victimized child is broad, encompassing not only physical but emotional and psychological safety, which requires validation of full extent of harm suffered and restored relationships with her mother, siblings and extended family members. The chapter focuses on the ongoing work with the harming father to build safety. Accountability and visibility of the harming father is central to the safety and well-being of all family members. Definitions and examples of goals, standards and plans of action are included in the Orientation Booklet and are core concepts throughout treatment. Many harming parents arrive at assessment with a view their actions were unplanned, spontaneous and poorly judged expressions of affection and love. The conclusion of assessment is marked by the formalizing of a treatment agreement specifically tailored to the needs of the family.
