ABSTRACT

There are several formal qualifications which enable people to study psychology. This chapter considers the A-level qualification offered in the UK and the undergraduate degree in psychology. For the student considering A-levels or equivalent, example Scottish Advanced Highers with a view to pursuing a career in Mental Health, Psychology A-level and/or other science based-subjects would be useful to choose. However, an A-level in Psychology is not a requirement to study psychology at university and some people would believe that the content of Psychology A-level studies does not prepare for study at degree level. An undergraduate psychology degree provides one with the foundation for all potential careers that are psychology related and many that are not as it provides one with a broad range of skills applicable to several careers. There is an emphasis on psychology as a science throughout the course which enables one to develop their skills in research and critical appraisal, amongst other things.
