ABSTRACT

Culture is the collection of behaviours and beliefs that make a group of people unique and identifiable. Cultural diversity is a fact of life in the world of work. Corporations are recognizing the need to meet the challenge of change in the workplace. They are beginning to see that the immigrant employee requires special adaptation strategies. The world of work is composed of people from many different cultural and economic backgrounds. The Peace Corps assists volunteers and provides training both in-country and prior-to-country entrance. However, even the extensive preparation given the Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) does not prevent them from suffering from culture shock during the first weeks and months in their host nation. Legislatures, school boards, unions, and educational organizations will need to be aware of the training needs and focus their energies on the promotion and protection of all people who are in the pool for potential employment.
