ABSTRACT

To truly transform a school to implement Response to Intervention (RtI) with integrity and fidelity, staff members need to embrace components of the five Stages of Implementation: Study and Commit, Plan, Build Capacity, Implement and Monitor, and Continuously Improve. As schools redesign regular and special education together to implement robust systems of RtI, some unforeseen changes may occur. Some teachers may try to pressure school staff to stop the system of RtI because they do not want to work so hard. Even though the whole system of RtI is spelled out, some staff may focus most of their efforts on the lowest achieving students to the detriment of the higher achieving students. While RtI involves extremely hard work and may be difficult to implement, teachers will find renewed confidence in their abilities to make a difference in every student's learning when they are working in a school in which RtI is the way business is done.
