ABSTRACT
Chapter 9 of Patterns: Design and Composition is concerned with a substantial group of designs known as ‘tilings’, which exhibit geometric or symmetry characteristics like regular patterns. Recognition is made of the important role played by Islamic design in tiling developments. This chapter introduces the reader to various forms of grid-like arrangements known as lattices, and it is argued that such structures can be of value in regular-pattern design and composition.
