ABSTRACT

The recognition by a family that they have a handicapped child introduces a number of mixed reactions. Some educational districts do not provide certain kinds of service and therefore, to meet a particular need, the child may be sent away from home. Students are advised to spend some of their time with a family where there is a handicapped child. Schools for the handicapped could help to organize home relief services. However, many severely retarded and physically handicapped children can live at home successfully provided there are adequate services in the surrounding community. Ideally a residential situation should provide the child with the opportunity to learn effective family living. The desirability of follow-up and placement services has been discussed and a teacher who knows a child well can often help him through emotional problems at home and in community life.
