ABSTRACT

In the twenty-first century science and technology are coming to be seen as indistinguishable activities, often referred to by the term technoscience. It is difficult to characterize many of the developments that have come to form the basis of the modern western world as either purely scientific or purely technological. Much of the confusion over what is science and what is technology originated during World War II. Philosopher of technology Carl Mitcham has traced the term technology from the time of the ancient Greeks to the modern era. It was not until the sixteenth century that technology began to take on a broader meaning when Peter Ramus, used the term technologia to refer to a systematic study of the arts and sciences. In 1966 the US Department of Defense issued a report entitled Project Hindsight which attempted to analyze the contribution of basic scientific research to the development of 20 weapon systems since World War II.
