ABSTRACT

Librarians are in a unique position within a school system to effect change through an open and representative collection of materials: trade books, magazines, journals, audiovisual materials, and all types of supplementary materials. The librarian's equity role within the school community can and should include participating in the textbook evaluation and selection committee, working with teachers to encourage literacy, and keeping an eye out for censorship. Librarians should provide all groups of the school's population with materials that are appropriate for them and that encourage them to read and explore, celebrate special days and holidays with resources from a wide variety of sources. The Early Childhood/Elementary and Secondary sections attempt to pull together a wide range of nontraditional resources and books, discussing stereotyping in children's literature and writings of and on various groups.
