ABSTRACT

The characteristics and pathways that emerge can be understood at a higher level of organisation and analysis as a form of contextual typology. This chapter provides an early view of what such a typology may eventually look like, as languages are revitalised in greater numbers around the world, as longer-term language revitalisation pathways begin to become evident, and as more data on these phenomena becomes available. The consistency of spelling can vary considerably between language programs depending on whether there is an established orthography and how extensively it is used. The chapter considers the development of texts and other program features evident in the case studies and associated with specific themes in the model and relates these to patterns of influence identified in relation to other themes. A generally accessible, community-supported dictionary is essential for an increase in the number of people able to engage actively and semi-independently in language use.
