ABSTRACT

A brief summary of the Calculus Reform Movement might stress two points: the need for active learning in the classroom, and the caution that a multitude of details can cloud main ideas. Reformists commented that it was not necessarily important what an instructor covered in a course, but rather on what students learned. An undergraduate computer science major typically seeks to prepare students for jobs in industry or government, further study in graduate school, careers in fields which use computing, or teaching at various levels. As the discipline of computing evolves over time, new topics emerge as being important, while some other topics may diminish in importance, some topics may require substantial updating, and yet other topics may become outdated. Overall, one common goal of education is to help students move from one level of understanding and mastery to the next, and challenging students can help students develop.
