ABSTRACT

A course or course module on technology/computing and social/ethical issues likely requires at least three elements: The understanding of some basics of technology and computing and their consequences; a framework for the consideration of social and ethical matters; and an environment that requires students to actively engage vital concepts and issues. Topics for discussion include: getting started with social/ethical foundations, choices in designing a course, the role of case studies, inclusion of current events, and engaging students. Since these courses have a technical focus, students are developing technical mastery throughout the course, addressing the first essential element listed. Faculty using current events in class often report that such stories and the resulting discussions keep students involved and reinforce the relevance of the material under study.
