River Flooding

The 2013 Alberta fl oods have great signifi cance for Canada. Flooding is our country’s most common natural hazard, yet we have been slow to recognize the benefi ts of restricting development on fl oodplains . Changes in land use, especially urbanization, have increased fl ood risk along thousands of streams and rivers in towns and cities across Canada. The best way to reduce and minimize this risk is simple: Do not build on fl oodplains.
