ABSTRACT

This chapter considers door and window symbols and specifications on floor plans and describes skylights, sloped glazing, and tubular daylighting devices. It explains the characteristics, terminology, and ratings for insulated windows. The chapter discusses the characteristics, terminology, and installation practices for pre-hung doors. It explores the characteristics, terminology, and installation practices for pocket doors and also explains the proper window installation practices. The chapter also describes skylight terminology, framing, and installation practices. Skylights are a proven method of providing natural daylighting into the interior of a building, and to a greater extent than windows since windows are limited to the outside walls. Skylight flashing is galvanized sheet metal that is bent in an L-shape and used around the skylight structure to direct water away from the curb and over the roofing material. The skylight can have a manufacturer-installed seal tape under the frame that seals the skylight to the curb.
