ABSTRACT

This chapter describes site excavation and infill and grading practices and the fundamentals of a site survey. It explains slope and grade, and the measurements used to locate survey stakes. The chapter explores the difference in material and use of solid lumber beams and glued-laminated beams and considers the importance of surface runoff control and practices. It also describes corner staking applications for different types of foundation excavation practices. The chapter discusses environmental protection related to site excavation and preparation including a storm water pollution prevention plan. It presents common erosion and sediment control practices and also discusses construction site dust control, noise restrictions, and recycling construction material waste. Soil roughening reduces runoff velocity, increases water penetration, reduces erosion, traps sediment, and prepares the soil for seeding and planting. Sand fences can be used as perimeter controls around open construction sites to keep sediments from blowing off-site onto roads, streams, and adjacent properties.
