ABSTRACT

This chapter describes different types of foundation systems, concrete characteristics, concrete forms, and concrete construction applications. It explains the use of steel reinforced concrete and the types of steel reinforcing used in concrete construction. The chapter considers the function of concrete piers and the use of post bases and post caps and also explains the function of concrete slab control joints. It discusses basement foundation construction, including basement slab, expansion joint, footing drain, and wall waterproofing. The chapter provides the use of insulating concrete forms used in foundation construction and explores the installation of under slab electrical, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning, and plumbing. Plumbing is the pipes, fixtures, and other equipment of a water, gas, or sewage system in a building. The plumber trenches locations for the plumbing, installs the plumbing, and backfills around the plumbing using clean material from the trench excavation or sand to protect the pipes during and after backfill.
