ABSTRACT

This chapter describes conventional roof framing materials, practices, terminology, skylight terminology, framing, and installation practices. It discusses dormer framing applications, framing cathedral and vaulted ceilings, and the light steel roof framing practices and terminology. The chapter also describes truss roof framing materials, practices and terminology, and timber-frame roof framing materials, practices and terminology. It examines roofing materials and roofing installation practices, and presents the use of roof vents. Roof vents are installed on the roof during the roofing. A ventilation roof vent is a screened louver installed on a gable end or a small screened dome mounted near the ridge of the roof to allow the passage of air from the eave vents through the attic and out through the roof. Additional roof vents are installed for mechanical equipment exhaust such as the chimney required to exhaust a furnace.
