ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author talks about Sarah Bednarz's response to Phillip VanFossen's commentary. C3 Framework acknowledges the separate modes of thinking of the social sciences in a fresh way. It emphasizes inquiry, a life skill that we should be able to support and encourage through social studies. While VanFossen is not enthusiastic about this aspect of C3, the author think it presents a real opportunity for the social studies to become relevant, meaningful, and exciting to young people. The author recently reviewed proposals for the National Council for the Social Studies annual meeting. Submissions had to link to an aspect of C3 and it was clear to me that it was not on the radar in any meaningful way of the 15 proposals. Almost all identified their content as geography but the focus was more on language arts, featured some form of historical thinking, and promised PowerPoint slides to participants.
