ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of themes emphasized throughout the book and asks students to reflect upon the relevance of social psychological theories and concepts to societal patterns and problems as well as to students' personal experiences. The purpose of chapter in discussing the research literature on grit, and its limitations, is to provide a context within which to summarize the main themes addressed throughout this book and to illustrate how they examined by sociological social psychologists. Initial research involving the analysis of survey data indicated that grit is a strong predictor of educational outcomes. Sociological social psychology provides students with theoretical frameworks for identifying and understanding the nature of expectations and their consequences and draws students' attention to the reciprocal relationship between individuals and society. Psychological social psychologists, including those who study grit, do not assess how the structure of the society within which people's interactions are embedded affects their opportunities, perceptions, and behaviors.
