ABSTRACT

A neat trick that most news anchors and reporters learn how to do is to actually read ahead a few words from what we hear or see them saying. It's somewhat of a protection mechanism so that if there is an error or problem coming up, by the time they hit it, they hopefully have already figured it out or come up with a way around it. Many of the wire services, such as the Associated Press (AP), periodically put out pronunciation guides for the names, places or words that are being regularly seen in the stories on the wires. They're updated frequently as new names and words enter the news cycle. Everyone makes mistakes. That's part of being human. And we are generally working very fast to put out a lot of stories in a short amount of time. But we should try to minimize the errors as much as possible.
