ABSTRACT

One would be from the consideration of language, the development of which constitutes one of the chief measures of superiority in human over animal learning. Many books have been written upon the development of language both in the race and in the child. We have spoken of understanding and reasoning as themselves activities, and the fundamental principle of successful learning and efficient teaching is that there can be no divorce between knowing and doing. Only the expert can distinguish one kind of aeroplane from another, but even those of us who do not drive a motor-car are learning with experience to know by their appearance different makes of cars, while the enthusiastic schoolboy can often distinguish them by sound alone. The authors deals with some aspects of the learning process in respect of the child's growing control of environment, and we have emphasized the essential unity of action and thought.
