ABSTRACT

The scope and range of potential PM research topics and approaches that might be taken to conduct that research has increased greatly since the turn of this century. This provides the potential doctoral candidate with opportunities, but perhaps also greater challenges in working from idea to research question. This chapter provides guidance on foundational requirements for sound decision making about framing a research question and objectives that lead to valuable research that in turn contributes to a body of knowledge. Many of these lessons apply to honours and master’s candidates (both research and coursework with a minor thesis) and other students undertaking assignments that requires theory to be compared to practice.
