ABSTRACT

Our story starts on the fateful day that Charlie walked into my office, sat down across from me and said, ‘So who’s my supervisor now?’ Such an approach was hardly unexpected from Charlie,

a full fee-paying international scholar, who suddenly found herself a ‘research orphan’ after her primary supervisor relocated to another university to take up a promotion, and her co-supervisor retired. The untimely departure of her chosen supervisory team in the relatively early stages of her candidature was understandably unsettling for Charlie. Appropriately, she turned to me, as research chair of her academic School, to resolve the problem, even though she knew my research expertise was not in mainstream PM.
