ABSTRACT

KEEP, PRESERVE, SAVE. The idea of having in one's possession is common to all these terms; it is, however, the simple meaning of keep (see HOLD): to preserve, from prœ, beforehand, and servare, to keep, that is, to keep for future use, signifies to keep with care and free from all injury; to save, allied to safe, is to keep laid up in a safe place and free from destruction.
