ABSTRACT

Naturescaping, or greenscaping, is an ecological design approach to creating balanced, self-sustaining ecosystems to inspire our connections with nature and place. In landscapes across America, the typical lawn is striving to emulate an 18th century landscape from England, where wealthy landowners maintained expansive pastoral views. Frederick Law Olmstead, the designer of New York City’s Central Park, set the tone for suburban landscape development with his Chicago Riverside development, which mandated extensive open lawns with scattered trees and houses set far back from the sidewalk.
