ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the ways in which the circulating discourses work to position youth subjectivities as passive and acontextual. It describes a participatory action research method called Photovoice to highlight its potential for working against the problematic discursive frames. The chapter highlightes the need for research with young people to move away from traditional paradigms that construct youth as 'lacking'. However, modern times present even greater challenges to young people as a result of growing environmental and personal risks; extensive consumerism; unreliable employment opportunities; increased individualization and greater instability within families. The chapter presents opportunities to uncover and foster positive alternative representations and practices of masculinity and femininity that will contribute toward equality and non-violence. Within an era that obsesses over 'youth at risk', it is youth sexuality that elicits the most anxiety. A range of analytic techniques are usually employed to analyze the varied data obtained from Photovoice projects.
