ABSTRACT

Companies serving a large group of customers seek to deliver as much value to as many customers of their products and services. The unit that this value is represented in is a feature, i.e. a unit of functionality that can be identified by a user as a logical entity. The role of product management is, basically, to identify features that add value to customers and then to prioritize those features that add the most value to the most customers. The R&D organization then is concerned with developing these features as rapidly as possible in order to get these deployed to customers. We refer to the constant stream of new features being developed as the throughput of the R&D organization.
