ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the fusion of VGI , primarily textual posts from Twitter , ground photographs from Flickr and radiological measurements from Safecast Geiger counters, with remote sensing data, mainly aerial photographs that were collected from a Falcon Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and Civil Air Patrol airplanes, as well as several high-resolution satellite images. Three different test cases are discussed that leverage data fusion to determine damage assessment in near real time, and its subsequent mitigation and recovery. These case studies include the September 2013 Colorado Flood, the March 2011 Japanese Fukushima nuclear disaster , and the October 2012 landfall of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey.
