ABSTRACT

This chapter explores South Korea’s shipping industry, which has been undergoing tremendous growth and change. It examines how the Korean shipping industry has been pursuing the tremendous growth under different circumstances since World War II and what obstacles have existed. The chapter also explores the growth of the Korean shipping industry in the context of the global shipping market from a historical perspective, with regard to how Koreans could shape their shipping industry and with what kinds of effort. Korea’s modern shipping industry began following pressure from western countries to open trade in the late Chosun Dynasty. In the Korean shipping industry, maritime routes were opened and operated mainly for anthracite coals and grains. In term of international shipping, trading with Japan was important in international routes. The enlargement of industrial carriers and vessels had a tremendous impact on the global shipping industry.
