ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces several communication theories applicable to sport communication. It begins by defining and describing theory. In addition, it points to important functions of theories and their relationship to research study in the field of sport communication. A significant part of the chapter is used to briefly present several communication theories, showing how each of them is applied to understanding sport communication in contexts that include interpersonal, leadership, strategic communication, media communication, sport fan, sport and critical communication, identity, and image communication.
