ABSTRACT

Types of new media are described in this chapter, including Twitter, YouTube, blogs, WeChat, and fan discussion forums. Importantly, characteristics and functions that define new media and differentiate them from traditional media are described in the chapter. The chapter also goes into discussing why new media is growing and their impact on sport communication. There is also a section that describes how new media is changing consumption of sport in terms of instantaneous reports on events, increasing subscription, and relationships between athlete and consumers, among others.
