ABSTRACT

Intrinsic value is 'value' because of the urgency individuals feel when a want originates within the self. In contrast, extrinsic motivation is defined as a construct that applies when activity is performed for its instrumental value, rather than simply enjoyment of the process. At the core of an intrinsically motivated experience lies the empowerment to participate. Play value is described as the relationship between the physical and mental stimuli of a product or system, stimuli that prompt the user to engage in a relationship with the system. DEEP experiences are journeys in time, that expand both in the breadth of actions available and the depth of the engagement allowed. The four phases of DEEP experiences are Discovery, Engagement (emotional and intellectual), Empowerment and Participation. Engagement is a human experience equally concerned with the meaning of things for the individual, as well as with the capacity of the thing to transform the individual.
